Caring for your Jewellery
If you require further advice please feel free to contact me using the contact form.
Please take care of your jewellery as you would any precious item!
These tips are applicable to pretty much any kind of jewellery whatever it is made of, but as my jewellery is very often made from different media combined it’s worth being extra careful!
-
Remove before swimming or bathing. Some very pure metals like gold or fine silver might be OK but in general water isn’t good with metals and water can seep into spaces in jewellery settings and get trapped too ! Sea water and chlorinated water are mildly corrosive!
-
Avoid contact with chemicals. Remember that fragrance, body lotions, hairspray, SPF and cosmetics fall in this category, so remove jewellery before applying!
-
Store jewellery properly. Don’t leave your precious pieces where they can get damaged or stepped on (and away from pets and children of course!). Jewellery made from metals that tarnish with exposure to air (sterling silver, copper, bronze) should be stored in small boxes or bags to minimise this. Keep your earrings safe on their jewellery cards too!
-
Clean and polish regularly. Not all jewellery needs this but silver, copper, bronze and plated metals will naturally tarnish over time. They can be buffed with a jewellery cloth to maintain their shine! Be careful when using specialist jewellery cleaning products as it can damage non-metallic components. Some natural stones do not play well with water
